Sport store opens doors

Sports and fashion retailer JD is due to open a major two-floor store at Eastgate Shopping Centre in Basildon in August.

JD has signed a new lease to house the store in four units, with two on the ground floor and two on the centre’s first floor.

Designer children’s wear retailer Base is also due to expand its shop at the centre into a larger unit on the ground floor opposite department store Debenhams.

PureGym opened a new 24-hour branch in April on Eastgate’s Southernhay, and signed up more than 3,500 members in its first month.

Last month independent real estate company Sovereign Centros were taken on as asset and development managers by investment management firm InfraRed Capital Partners, which owns Eastgate Shopping Centre.

Graeme Jones, senior asset and development manager at Sovereign Centros, said: “We are delighted to welcome JD and PureGym on board at Eastgate. It shows great confidence in the centre that such premium brands are arriving.

“Eastgate is thriving at the heart of the busy town of Basildon, with the shopping centre a compelling attraction for families with children and for people of all ages drawn by its premier retailers and leisure operators.”
