Vaulting ambition in Pitsea
Work has started on a £230,000 gymnastics facility in Pitsea, as part of an initiative to encourage more people across the borough of Basildon to get active.
South Essex Gymnastics Club (SEGC) is transforming the current sports hall at Everyone Active’s Eversley Leisure Centre in Crest Avenue into a gymnastic studio, to attract aspiring athletes.
With current members including gymnasts Max Whitlock, Amy Tinkler, Reiss Beckford and Brinn Bevan, SEGC is aiming to make the sport more accessible to people across Basildon, especially those from the local community in Pitsea, and will offer priority membership to the facility.
The facility forms part of a wider redevelopment of Eversley Leisure Centre, which has seen Basildon Council invest an additional £570,000 to install new outdoor 3G artificial football pitches.
Gavin Callaghan, Basildon Council’s chairman of the policy and resources committee, said: "It's incredibly exciting that work has started on redeveloping this local sports facility, which will create opportunities for those who want to take part in gymnastics and other sports locally.
"It's also great that the gymnastics club has agreed to prioritise membership to local residents; this is a positive step in tackling health inequalities in the area and gives young people a real extracurricular activity to engage in in their hometown of Pitsea."
